Conservative dentistry focuses on treating the enamel and dentin, the parts of the tooth that are visible to the naked eye and contain nerve-free canals that are harder than bone. In conservative dentistry, cavities in the enamel and dentin are cleaned using special dental instruments. Then, the remaining healthy tooth tissue is preserved, and the tooth is filled to resemble its original shape, allowing it to regain its function. The most commonly used filling materials today are amalgam, porcelain, or composite fillings.
